Renesas Electronics, a leading global semiconductor solutions provider, has announced the successful implementation and certification of its Automotive Cybersecurity Management System (CSMS) according to the international standard ISO/SAE 21434:2021. The CSMS framework is housed at the Renesas Design Center in Musashi, Japan, and has been certified by TÜV Rheinland Industrie Service GmbH.
The certification emphasizes Renesas Electronics' dedication to supporting Tier 1 suppliers and automotive manufacturers (OEMs) in fulfilling their CSMS responsibilities. As per the recent United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) UNR155 regulation, this will aid OEMs in obtaining vehicle type certification. Renesas has committed to following the certified ISO/SAE 21434:2021 CSMS development process for all automotive-grade MCUs and SoCs developed after January 1, 2022, including the 16-bit RL78 and 32-bit RH850 MCUs, as well as the popular R-Car SoC product family.
In the words of the Vice President of the HPC Core Technology Division at Renesas: "Through independent third-party certification, customers can be confident that Renesas Electronics' management of the CSMS process complies with the requirements defined by ISO/SAE 21434:2021. OEMs and Tier 1 suppliers can rely on this type of independent third-party certification to streamline their model approval process without having to conduct their own audits of our process."
Renesas Electronics has played a significant role in developing the ISO/SAE 21434:2021 standard on a global scale and maintains a strong commitment to cybersecurity beyond the automotive sector. In 2019, the company received TÜV Rheinland certification for compliance with the IEC 62443-4-1 standard, which outlines process requirements for the safe development of industrial products.
With a continuous focus on developing safe and reliable products for its customers, Renesas Electronics' ISO/SAE 21434:2021 certification follows its ISO 26262 certification for automotive-grade MCUs and SoCs. This assures customers that Renesas MCUs and SoCs used in next-generation in-vehicle systems will adhere to international standards for product cybersecurity and functional safety.
