U.S. semiconductor manufacturing expected to face talent shortage

According to a Reuters report on July 25, a research report pointed out that the US semiconductor manufacturing industry will increase jobs in the next few years, and it is expected to add about 115,000 new jobs by 2030. However, the study also warns that the industry will face the challenge of a talent shortage, with some 67,000 jobs expected to go unfilled, accounting for around 58% of new jobs created.

U.S. semiconductor manufacturing expected to face talent shortage

The research report pointed out that the semiconductor industry is an important driver of US economic strength. It can not only promote economic growth, but also ensure the key technologies needed for national security. But like other key sectors of the economy, semiconductor manufacturing is facing labor shortages.

The report authors stress that the semiconductor manufacturing talent shortage is only part of the overall economy-wide labor shortage in the United States. According to the Semiconductor Industry Association, by 2030, 3.85 million new jobs requiring technical knowledge will be created in the United States, but 1.4 million of these jobs may go unfilled.

In order to avoid a serious talent shortage, the report authors recommend that the U.S. government strengthen its support for regional cooperation programs and promote the establishment of a semiconductor professional and technical talent pool plan. In addition, it is also crucial to establish a nationwide training system for engineers and computer science professionals, because they play a vital role in the development of the semiconductor industry and future industries. The report authors also called on the U.S. government to attract more international students with higher education to fill the talent gap.

In short, the US semiconductor manufacturing industry will usher in an increase in job opportunities in the next few years, but at the same time, it also needs to deal with the challenge of talent shortage. The government, industry, and education departments should work together to strengthen cooperation, cultivate and introduce talents in relevant professions, so as to ensure the healthy development of the semiconductor industry and the technological leadership of the United States.
