TSMC to build its second factory in Japan, expected to start construction in April next year

Recently, Mass media in Japan reported that the second Japanese factory under TSMC's evaluation will start construction in April next year, and is expected to start producing 12nm process chips by the end of 2026. The new factory is expected to invest a total investment of over 1 trillion yen.

Liu Deyin, chairman of TSMC, once said that TSMC would continue to invest in Japan to support the long-term development of the Semiconductor industry.

The senior leaders of TSMC have responded to doubts from the outside world that TSMC will build a second wafer factory in Japan, stating that they cannot rule out the possibility of producing advanced chips in Japan in the future.

At the TSMC regular shareholders' meeting on June 6th, Liu Deyin discussed the construction of a second new factory in Japan, stating that the location of the factory is still chosen in Kumamoto and may be near the first factory. Moreover, the Japanese government hopes that TSMC will build a second factory, and subsidies for the new factory are currently under discussion. "Many customers feel that TSMC's production capacity in Japan is still insufficient.

It is rumored that TSMC's second Japanese factory will be set up near Juyang cho, Kumamoto Prefecture Prefecture. TSMC Japan's first factory is expected to start production in December 2024, and currently plans to produce 22/28nm and 12/16nm process chips with a monthly production capacity of 55000 pieces.

TSMC Kumamoto Factory is operated by "Japan Advanced Semiconductor Manufacturing (JASM)", a Foundry model service subsidiary established in Kumamoto Prefecture, while Sony's wholly-owned subsidiary "Sony Semiconductor Solutions Company", Toyota Group, a Japanese automobile industry leader, and Denso, a Japanese automobile parts and components factory, all contribute to JASM.

Moreover, Liji Electric has gone to Japan to build a factory, and has announced that it has reached an agreement with the financial group SBI Holding Co., Ltd. (SBI) to jointly build a 12 inch wafer foundry in Japan.
