Supply chain news | Compal signs land use agreement for third Vietnam factory, with a transaction value of $30 million

Recently, Taiwanese company Compal Electronics (Vietnam) Co., Ltd. obtained land use rights in Lien Ha Thai Industrial Park in Thai Binh Province, Vietnam, with a total area of 400,000 square meters, for a transaction value of $30 million, according to a statement from its parent company, Quanta Computer.

Quanta Computer is one of the largest notebook computer manufacturers in the world and a long-term supplier to Apple, producing MacBook, iPad and iWatch. Prior to this, Quanta had two factories in Vietnam, both located in Yen Phong Industrial Park, mainly producing network communication products and intelligent devices. The newly signed contract for the third factory will be "for the production of intelligent devices or computer products".

The factory is expected to be completed within the year, officially put into operation next year, and produce 12 million products in the first phase by 2026; 24 million products are expected to be produced by 2030, and the total amount of products is expected to reach 30 million by 2031, according to reports.

In recent years, Quanta has continued to lay out the automobile and medical fields, but due to the low proportion, it has not been able to reverse the operating bottleneck caused by weak NB demand. Currently, Quanta's domestic production base includes Chongqing, Chengdu and Kunshan. However, in order to meet the needs of European and American customers, Quanta has also been continuously transferring production capacity to Vietnam.

Another Apple supplier from Taiwan, Foxconn, has entered the mass production phase at its factory in Haiphong, Vietnam, mainly producing consumer electronics products. According to Foxconn, the industry is now focusing on production of consumer electronics products, and there is no urgent need for it to produce notebooks in Vietnam yet.

In addition, Apple suppliers such as Luxshare, Pegatron, and GoerTek have laid out their presence in Vietnam as well. Data shows that by 2025, the proportion of iPads and Apple Watch, MacBook, AirPods produced in Vietnam will be 20%, 20%, 5%, and 65%, respectively.
