The performance and control accuracy of a motor are closely related to the accuracy of its position detection. High-precision position detection relies on advanced sensor technology. At this point, designers now have the option of using inductive position sensors with higher positioning accuracy to improve motor control and performance.
Onsemi offers a new absolute encoder, the NCS32100 rotary position sensor. It consists of two printed circuit boards (PCBs), one is the rotor with two printed inductors, and the other is the stator with both printed inductors and an encoder IC.
The sensor is an absolute encoder that provides position data even when the rotor is not moving. Its standard module is equipped with an embedded microcontroller (MCU) with firmware using a programmable M0−ARM® MCU that outputs position and velocity rather than raw analog signals. The flexibility of this design allows the module to be connected to different inductive sensor modes and provide a variety of electronic output formats.
The mechanical design of this sensor is simple, the component count is low, and the number of external components required (such as bypass capacitors, tuning capacitors, etc.) is also significantly reduced. Its plug-and-play nature makes it easy to calibrate, and its error correction/diagnostic features make it easy to install and operate. Like other inductive sensors, it has high safety and high stability.
The NCS32100 rotary position sensor is specifically designed to meet the requirements of industrial applications. The scope of application of its dual-inductance position sensor includes areas where mid-to-high-end optical encoders are currently used, as well as applications such as robots, industrial drives, factory automation systems, and various industrial machinery.
When designers evaluate sensor options, they must consider not only whether they meet the operational requirements of the application, but also their long-term service life.
In this case, ON Semiconductor's NCS32100 rotary position sensor helps reduce component count, extend operating life, and simplify calibration operations, thereby reducing total cost of ownership.
