Recently, NXP announced the launch of Trimension™ NCJ29D6, a fully integrated automotive single-chip ultra-wideband (UWB) family that combines next-generation secure and accurate real-time positioning and short-range radar capabilities to address multiple use cases with a single system, including Secure car access, child presence detection, intrusion alarms, gesture recognition and more. The devices will be deployed by major automotive OEMs and are expected to be available in 2025 model years.
As one of the industry's broadest UWB portfolios, the new series includes the highly integrated NCJ29D6B, the next generation UWB device for secure automotive access control that delivers enhanced ranging performance, lower system cost, and higher security sex and one-stop software. The family also includes the pin-compatible NCJ29D6A, the industry's first automotive device to combine ranging and short-range UWB radar capabilities into a single chip with an integrated MCU.
This enables OEMs to transform a single UWB-based automotive access control system into a fully flexible, multi-purpose platform that can implement multiple use cases using the same hardware. OEMs can also eliminate redundant systems, thereby reducing cost, space and reduce weight. For example, OEMs can also use their secure car access systems to provide features such as child presence detection to comply with regulations such as the US Hot Car Act and the Euro NCAP roadmap. This helps simplify development and allows OEMs and Tier 1 suppliers to add additional functionality through software updates, helping to lower total cost of ownership and accelerate time to market for new features.
Markus Staeblein, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Secure Automotive Access at NXP Semiconductors, said: "UWB will bring a new consumer automotive experience, and this is just one area where UWB technology is trying its best. Utilizing the Trimension NCJ29D6 UWB IC to provide a new software-defined experience A single system will bring long-term benefits to automotive OEMs and Tier 1 suppliers. With our expertise and standardization work in bodies such as the Connected Cars Consortium (CCC) and FiRa Alliance, we are helping UWB become an important part of the automotive ecosystem .”
1. Next generation secure car access control solution
The new NCJ29D6B enables enhanced secure car access, allowing users to achieve hands-free car door control via a digital key on a UWB-enabled mobile phone. NCJ29D6B offers a number of performance enhancements to provide OEMs with maximum design flexibility and help future-proof secure automotive access capabilities.
Higher RF sensitivity and two simultaneously operating receive chains support antenna diversity and angle-of-arrival concepts, capable of detecting small changes in distance or direction of movement of other UWB-enabled devices. NCJ29D6B focuses on system cost, with higher CPU performance, larger memory capacity and high integration, including an integrated digital CAN transceiver. This allows developers to reduce the number of components per anchor to a single chip.
2. Use radar to expand UWB functions
The pin-compatible NCJ29D6A extends the positioning capabilities of the NCJ29D6B with a short-range UWB radar. As the first automotive device to integrate these functions into a single chip and use an integrated MCU, the NCJ29D6A can sense the surrounding environment. This enables OEMs to transform a single UWB-based system into a multi-purpose platform, enabling multiple use cases using the same hardware.
In addition to secure car access, automotive OEMs can integrate in-car sensing for child presence detection and seat belt reminders, kick sensors to automatically open the trunk, and various smart gesture recognitions, allowing them to maximize UWB capabilities value in automotive applications.
3. Incorporate safety into product design
NXP’s new UWB family has been designed with the expectation that the types of physical and cyber security attacks on vehicles will increase over time and therefore the need for integrated security features in the future. Both devices are designed to exceed ISO21434 cybersecurity requirements.
In addition, CCC MAC and FiRa MAC provide standard-compatible UWB ranging protocols that can be directly connected to customer application software, thereby realizing and simplifying the AUTOSAR architecture.
4. Expand car access control product portfolio
The new Trimension IC family expands NXP’s portfolio of Connected Car Association-based smart access solutions, including the KW45/47 wireless MCU for Bluetooth Low Energy, NCx332x automotive NFC front-end, NCJ37x automotive security element and the FS24 series of automotive security Mini CAN FD SBC.
