NOR Flash: A Crucial Focus in IoT Development

Low power consumption has become a critical focus in the Internet of Things (IoT) landscape due to the increasing demand for low-power devices like MCUs, storage chips, and others. As a result, low power consumption has emerged as an essential aspect of product design for many manufacturers.

NOR Flash, a vital memory type in embedded systems, is extensively employed in IoT devices, typically for MCU data reading and execution. The process and read-speed of NOR Flash directly influence MCU performance, making it crucial for IoT device applications like wearables and health monitoring devices. Consequently, the voltage of NOR Flash in such low-power IoT devices has dropped from the mainstream 3.3V to 1.8V.

With advancements in technology, the operating voltage for wearables' MCU chips has dipped to as low as 1.2V, reducing product operating power consumption by nearly 50% and standby power consumption by about 33%. As a result, multiple manufacturers have introduced 1.2V NOR Flash products to the market, aiming to lower operating power consumption, extend battery life, streamline system power supply design, and optimize system costs.

Some notable players in the 1.2V NOR Flash market include Winbond Electronics, Macronix Electronics, and GigaDevice Innovation. These companies have launched their respective product lines, such as Winbond's W25Qxx 1.2V series, Macronix's MX25S series, and GigaDevice's GD25UF series. These products cater to the growing requirement for low power consumption in IoT devices, wearable devices, and mobile internet devices.

In addition, smaller players like Pro Semiconductor have entered the market with ultra-low voltage NOR Flash products, such as the GS N series 1.1V product line. These products further advance the objective for even lower power consumption and enhanced battery life.

Despite manufacturers like Juchen Semiconductor and Xintianxia planning to develop 1.2V NOR Flash-related products, the global NOR Flash market is currently dominated by Winbond, Macronix, and GigaDevice, which account for over 90% of the market share. As the demand for low-power devices in wearable devices and IoT markets continues to grow, it is anticipated that 1.2V NOR Flash products will increasingly penetrate the market.
