Intel partners with Ericsson to customize 5G chips, striving to regain technology leadership

According to news, on July 25, Intel announced that it had reached a cooperation agreement with Ericsson, a Swedish telecommunications equipment manufacturer, to customize 5G network equipment chips for it.

According to the agreement, Intel will provide Ericsson with highly differentiated leading products for future 5G infrastructure, and use Intel's vRAN Boost technology to optimize the fourth-generation Xeon Scalable processors to improve network capacity and energy efficiency, while providing Greater flexibility and scalability.

According to Intel, this 5G chip will use Intel's most advanced manufacturing technology, the Intel 18A process, which is the first time an external customer has used this technology.

Although Intel and Ericsson did not give a specific timetable, Intel has previously stated that Intel 18A technology will be ready by 2025.

Intel has lost its lead in making advanced semiconductors, being overtaken by rivals such as Samsung and TSMC. In order to turn the company around, Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger announced a major plan in 2021 to launch five generations of chip manufacturing processes in four years to regain the leading position.

Intel emphasized in the press release that this cooperation declares confidence in 18A technology and highlights the progress Intel has made on the four-year five-node roadmap in order to regain its technological leadership and restore its former glory.

Intel 18A is the most advanced process node in Intel's four-year five-node roadmap, based on a new gate-around transistor architecture (RibbonFET) and back-end power transmission (PowerVia) technology.

According to Intel, 18A will provide Ribbon architecture innovation and higher performance while continuing to reduce metal line width. The combination of these technologies will allow Intel to regain leadership by 2025.
