British media: Britain plans to spend 100 million pounds to purchase high-end AI chips

he British "Guardian" reported on the 20th that the government plans to spend 100 million pounds to purchase AI chips to gain a foothold for the UK in the global AI competition.

A previous report showed that the UK lacks the resources needed to develop AI, with fewer than 1,000 high-end GPU (graphics processing unit) chips available to researchers. The report suggests that more than 3,000 high-end GPU chips should be purchased as soon as possible.

The Guardian stated that the British government is negotiating with chip giants such as Nvidia, AMD and Intel, and plans to purchase about 5,000 GPUs from Nvidia. These chips will be used in high-precision AI models, supporting UK research institutes and companies to innovate and maintain international competitiveness. But industry insiders fear the government's action may be too late, too little, with UK semiconductor sales now accounting for just 0.5% of global semiconductor sales.

Sunak's government said in May it planned to invest £1bn over 10 years in semiconductor research, design and production, a sum that pales in comparison to US$52bn in US and EU43bn in subsidies.
